Paul Hanson’s 30-30 Vision

Paul Hanson was present at the creation… almost.   Paul wasn’t actually part of the original DV review panel -- the DV’s founder Christopher Thelen is the only remaining member of that crew almost 11 years later – but he joined up in October of 1997, making him among the site’s earliest recruits.  To celebrate his 10th anniversary (and, not incidentally, to help clear off his desk), Paul volunteered to produce thirty reviews in thirty days during September 2007, bringing him to an even 200 reviews in his tenure. It’s a plan just crazy enough to work…!1.  Various Artists – Now That’s What…

Classic Jazz Retrospective

Let’s not beat around the bush -- it’s tough to summarize a musical genre that defies definition. We can say this much: jazz was invented in America but descended from Africa.   It is said to have originated in New Orleans – specifically, in the horn-and-drum-playing bands that would accompany funeral processions through the city -- around the turn of the 20th century.  Since then, jazz has steadily morphed and spun off one subgenre after another, from swing to big band to bebop to hard bop to fusion to smooth jazz and the list goes on.  Wikipedia calls it “a blend of African American…

Michael R. Smith’s Pop 100

Never let it be said that Daily Vault staff writers aren't ambitious. While many of us present our capsulized Top 10 of the year every December, until Michael R. Smith came along, we'd never had anyone attempt a Top 100 featuring full reviews of all 100 albums.Michael's choices reflect his strong affection for pop music released between 1966 and 2006, though he did of course toss in a few surprises.  The reviews ran every Sunday beginning October 29, 2006 and concluded with his #1 pick on September 28, 2008.  More information about Michael is available at the reviewers' bio page…

Hip-Hop Retrospective

Hip-hop has come quite a ways since the days of sampling “Funky Drummer” and rockin’ Adidas shoes. The styles are as varied as the record crates they come from: Brooklyn, Queens, Detroit, Atlanta, L.A. We at the Vault are not the experts, so it’s a good thing the voices of these exceptional artists and entertainers speak for themselves. It is, after all, music of recognition, self-expression and cultural identity. And it's the genre we have chosen to honor this September (2006).For nearly three decades, hip-hop has seeped its way into American culture, and for those who don't consider it as…
